Arrests for violent crimes often entail extremely high bail amounts. Authorities want the public to feel safer and also want to ensure their suspect isn’t going anywhere and understands the severity of the situation.
One situation that has recently become quite severe is the case of an apparent triple homicide that spanned Sylmar, Pacoima and San Fernando. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a spree of shootings happened on the morning of Sunday, August 24. A woman on her way to church was shot and killed, while another victim, a 22-year-old wheelchair-bound female, was also shot. A third victim was not immediately identified after the crime and has been described as a male in his 20s or 30s.
Police have not informed the public of any sort of motive for the crimes, nor have they expressed knowledge of the victims being connected in any way.
Police have noted, however, that they have a person of interest in the crimes; the 34-year-old is now in custody with a bail set at $1 million. However, another arrest may follow, since officials believe a pair of men may have been responsible for the trio of drive-by shootings.
On the Sunday night after the shootings reportedly took place, a SWAT team was called to a home in Sylmar. There, the team engaged in a standoff before the 34-year-old was taken into custody. He was not initially arrested for the homicides, though. Police suspected the man of animal cruelty after the deaths of two dogs which reportedly took place the Saturday before the shootings. During his arrest a weapon was discovered, though, and police now have the male in custody on the staggering bail.
Unfortunately, drive-by shootings are not unusual in Los Angeles. The city is nearly known for this type of crime, which can leave scant evidence as well as conflicting witness accounts. Police often focus in on the weapon used in the alleged crime as well as witness recollections of suspicious vehicles in their area.
